Why is it called Ballard Nature Center?
Ernie Ballard owned the 210 acres. He donated it to the community and provided funds to build the visitor center. He created a 501 (C) 3 foundation to manage the site as a nature center with a focus on habitat restoration, trails, and providing educational programming. The grand opening was held in the year 2000.
How many trails are there?
There are four main trails. These four trails also feature connecting trails allowing visitors to shorten or lengthen their walk.
Is the Center volunteer ran?
Partly. The board of directors serve as volunteers and there are many volunteers that help with programs, staffing the visitor center, and maintaining the grounds.
How is the Nature Center's operations funded?
The main source of funds for Ballard is our annual banquet. Other funds are generated from program fees, donations, memorials, CRP, and a small endowment.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Pet owners also must clean up after their dogs.
Are bikes, horses, or other vehicles allowed on the trails?
No, our trails are only for foot traffic. Strollers and wagons are allowed and two of our trails are wheelchair accessible.
Is Ballard Nature Center run by the state?
No, the Center is a private, 501 (C) 3 - non-profit. We do not receive tax dollars.
Does the Nature Center receive grants?
Yes, we continually apply for grants. The grants we receive are not for general operation costs, though. Grants we receive are for improvement projects and programming. Our wetland overlook, fishing pier, and trail surfacing have been funded through grants.
